Why most players win something

Alongside the £1,000 and big prizes, tens of thousands of postcodes win small prizes most weeks: £15 on Thursdays, plus LotteryShop vouchers and e-gift cards. That is what makes the “1 in 4” possible. In the last year alone, 7,320 postcodes won £1,000 a ticket.

Postcode Lottery vs National Lottery

The operator quotes the Lotto jackpot at 1 in 22 million and EuroMillions at 1 in 139 million. The difference is the shape of the prizes, not just the odds: the National Lottery offers huge single jackpots, while Postcode Lottery spreads prizes across many postcodes and shares its biggest ones between neighbours. A single ticket can never win more than £500,000 in a draw.

Odds questions

Are the odds better than the National Lottery?

For winning something, yes: the operator puts the chance of a ticket winning a prize at better than 1 in 4 per draw month. The trade-off is that there is no giant rolling jackpot; the largest prizes are shared between neighbours.

Do more tickets improve my odds?

Each ticket is entered on its own, so two tickets double the amount you win when your postcode comes up. They do not make your postcode more likely to be drawn.

Are some areas luckier?

No. Places with many players produce many winners, which is why the winners map is crowded in cities, but every playing postcode has the same chance in each draw.
